Before You Call
A recruiter conversation isn't an interview — it's a two-way discussion about your goals and options. Here's how to make it count.
If you're not ready to speak with a recruiter directly, you can start with a Guard advisor. Just call 1-800-GO-GUARD or connect to chat. No recruiter, no commitment, no pressure.
What's keeping you from deciding? What do you need to know to move forward? Jot it down before the call. A recruiter can answer anything on your list — and cover things you hadn't thought to ask.
Recruiters want you to find the right fit. Being upfront about your goals, your timeline and your life situation helps them point you toward options that actually work for you.
Before your first meeting, use the Guard's fitness calculator and take a practice ASVAB to get a sense of where you stand. Your recruiter can walk you through results and tell you what they mean for your eligibility.
Legal history, medical conditions, prior injuries — don't assume they're disqualifying before you ask. Many situations have waivers. Being transparent upfront saves everyone time and often opens doors you didn't know existed.
Use the fitness calculator to see how you measure up to the Army Combat Fitness Test standard before talking to a recruiter.
Basic Combat Training transforms civilians into Soldiers physically and mentally. Know what to expect before you commit.
