Medical Professional Officer Accession Bonus (oab)

Special Pay Bonus
Physicians, dentists and a range of allied health professionals can receive a special pay accession bonus with a three-year service agreement paid out at the start of each year. 

Loan Repayment

Health Care Professional Loan Repayment Program (HPLRP)

Up to $250,000
Medical and Dental Corps officers, including clinical psychologists, can receive significant loan repayment assistance over a seven-year service commitment.

Stipend Programs

Support While You’re Still in Training

Medical and dental students, residents and fellows can receive monthly financial support before they ever see their first patient in uniform. 

Specialized Training Assistance Program (STRAP)

For residents and fellows:

Designed for those training in Guard-priority specialties, STRAP covers a monthly stipend while you complete your advanced training, with a service commitment that begins after residency, not during. 

Eligibility & Details:

  • Eligibility: Must be unconditionally accepted into the education program or residency for which you seek funding. 
  • Service obligation: One year of service for every six months (or part thereof) of stipend received. Obligation begins immediately following residency completion. 
  • Can be combined: HPLRP and STRAP may be offered simultaneously, provided you have completed at least two years of residency training.
  • Disclaimer: Stipend amount is adjusted annually. Contact your state AMEDD Specialty Branch Recruiter for the most current figure. 
  • Each month during residency: $2,270+

Medical and Dental Student Stipend Program (MDSSP)

MDSSP provides a monthly stipend to medical and dental students, with a one-year service obligation for every six months (or part thereof) of stipend received. Obligation begins after dental school or residency completion.
Eligibility and Details:

  • If you enter STRAP after MDSSP: Your MDSSP obligation starts at the beginning of residency and is reduced by one year for each year of STRAP stipend received.
  • Each month during residency $2,270+
